Dominion District runner-up Anjelica Esteves, a sophomore from Cosby, eliminated Capital District champion Yasmin Fotovat of Atlee 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the singles tennis tournament at Cosby.
Fotovat was the region runner-up a year ago.
The other three singles quarterfinals played out as expected although Nicole Parker of Mills Godwin, the Colonial District runner-up, was extended to a tiebreaker in the second set after winning the first set 6-0 against Central District champion Darya Uzzell of Matoaca. Parker captured the tiebreaker 9-7.
Esteves, a sophomore, and Parker, a senior, meet in one of today's semifinals that begins at noon at Cosby. The other matches Dominion champion Christine Abbott of Midlothian against Colonial winner Kelly Stewart of Mills Godwin. Abbott, a sophomore, advanced with a victory over Shao-Ching Tu of Atlee, and Stewart, a freshman, defeated Elizabeth Walsh of Prince George.
In the doubles, Haley Moses and Meg Kristofak of Mills Godwin, the Colonial runners-up, split sets in their doubles match with Esteves and Lauren Denuel but won the third, 7-5, to close in on a rematch with Stewart and Parker who take on Fotovat and Tu in today's semifinals.
