Congratulations to the Freshman football team who with a win last night at Monacan 29-6 finish their season undefeated. With last years team dropping one game, they become the first Titan freshman team to finish the season without a loss.
11.05 -
The Freshman football team plays it last game away tomorrow at Monacan. Last week the Titans won an impressive victory over Atlee 40 – 6 with scores both on the ground and in the air. Once again the defense played a great game only giving up 2 first downs. Tomorrow they will attempt to be the first Cosby Freshman football team to go undefeated for the season.

11.01 - Varina makes fast work of Cosby
Another beat down.... Titans fall in non district action.
If you didn't notice last night, Varina's #66
Marquis Wallace & #1 Trey Johnson were dominant. They are both signed to play at West Virginia next year. Two of the best players I've seen this year. These players can be held up as a yard sticks to measure against for what it takes to play in college at the division 1 level.
There was not a lot to cheer about on the Cosby side of the ball, other than Andre Redd, Jawuan Ferrel, Hunter Greer and Alex Crawford had good hard nosed performances.

10.20 - Freshmen Win
The freshman football team continued their undefeated season last night with a win over Freeman. The Titans put up 28 points while holding the Rebels to 6. Cosby scored two touchdowns on the ground and two in the air. Rushing touchdowns were scored by Kenny Tilghman and Trey Pane… in the air Aaron Birnbaum connected with Cole Hobson who also threw a touchdown pass to Zach Horvath. The defense was lead by Troy Barden with 9 tackles and two forced fumbles. The freshman Titans play again this Thursday at home against Manchester.”
10.17 - Cold, Rain and Titans all Victorious
If you were one of the daring few to venture out to last nights game, then I do not need to tell you it was cold and damp. After 2 days of “off and on” rain and 3 more forecast, Mother Nature cooperated to the extent she could, stopping the rain for most of the afternoon, but allowing a drizzle to start shortly before the homecoming festivities began. This adverse weather was not able to stop the senior class from winning “best float” and it would not stop the Titans from securing their 5th win of the season against Dominion District opponent George Wythe.
The Titans beat the Bulldogs 37 – 6. Cosby was definitely the better football team last night, but credit needs to be given to George Wythe. They were better than some people expected. They were able to use the weather and conditions to engineer a scoring drive, but penalties and turnovers were a constant albatross**. And they did not quit.
Cosby’s offense was led by Fuller Hoepner (12 carries 45 yards and 1 TD; 3 for 8 passing for 112 yards and 2 TD’s), Jawuan Ferrell (14 for 74 yards and 2 TD’s) , Chris Lusk (2 receptions for 61 yards and 1 TD) and Mike Hanley (1 – 51 yard reception for a TD and he also returned a punt for TD, the 3rd person to do so in Cosby history.) Cosby’s defense was led by Matt Daugherty (in on 9 tackles, 4 solo, ½ sack), Patrick Callaway (in on 8, 4 solo and 1.5 sacks), Blake Hutchinson (6 tackles, 2 solo, 2 sacks and 1 tackle for a loss) and Jordan Howerton (6 tackles, 1 solo, 1 sack and 1 tackle for a loss).
No amount of coffee or hot chocolate was going to keep the crowd in the stands after half time, once the coronation of the homecoming court was complete. The 2000+ in attendance dwindled to a hundred or so. Those who did stay got to see some nice plays by Cosby’s second string.
Hoping for the same outcome but better weather next week, when the Titans travel to Manchester to take on the (3-3) Lancers. Don’t be fooled by their record – they have a potent offense and used it effectively against us last year.
**- When used as a metaphor, albatross is defined as an encumbrance, or a wearisome burden

10.10 - LC Bird keeps streak alive with win
Titans fall to Skyhawks 21-14
The game lived up to its billing as the “game of the week”. Fans that came were treated to a great game.
The first quarter was like the early rounds of a heavyweight prize fight, with the combatants sparring, trying to find their opponents weak spots. The second quarter was similar to the middle to later rounds of the same bout, with each side throwing their punches, neither able to land a knockout blow. The Skyhawks were the first to draw blood after a Cosby turnover game them the ball at the Titan 10 yard line. The 9+ yard two play drive was capped with a 3 yard run by LC Bird’s Lionel Williams who took the ball around the left end for the score. This blow could have dazed the Titans but they answered with a 5 play 33 yard scoring drive of their own. The short field was courtesy of a Bird dead-ball penalty after their score, an offside penalty on the 1st kick and a Bryce Dillon kick return of 32 yards. Fuller Hoepner connected with Jainard Crawley-Lambert through the air to advance the ball. Hoepner called his own number, taking it 10 yards for the Titans first score.
Toe-to-Toe duking it out, Bird proceeded to score on a 3 play drive capped by an Anthony Harris to Brandon Williams catch and run of 64 yards. The ensuing PAT saw a muffed snap and failed attempt to make 2 out of a broken play leaving the crowd to wonder if this might be a decisive play. The Titans answered again on their next possession, driving 77 yards on 9 plays. Jainard Crawley-Lambert and Fuller Hoepner launched their own ground attack to put the Titans back in the lead.
The half ended with a fairly even game. The big difference being the missed PAT.
The 3rd quarter was a return to a chess match, with both teams having made adjustments at the half. As the 3rd quarter closed, Cosby was getting ready to punt. The 4th quarter started with that punt going directly to Bird’s Donte Meekins who faked two Titans and took the punt back 63 yards for a TD. This time, the Titans were not able to answer. LC Bird engineered a drive that used 7:07 of the 4th quarter, bring the clock down tom 9+ minutes to about 2 before they punted it away.
The Cosby defense, which hasn’t received a lot of press… was impressive. Anthony Delano lead the way with 10 tackles, 5 of them solo, Blake Hutchison 6 tackles, 5 solo two of which were sacks (with a 3rd near miss at another sack), Patrick Callaway 6 tackles, 4 solo, 1 a sack, Morgan Lusk 7 tackles, 3 solo, ½ sack Jawuan Ferrell 7 tackles and Hunter Greer 5.
Next up – Homecoming when the Titans host the Bulldogs from George Wythe.

High school football stats
Congratulations to the Freshman Football team who remain undefeated with a big shutout win last night again LC Byrd. The Titan offense was able to put up 36 points while their defense once again held their opponent scoreless. Scoring for the Titans was done both in the air & on the ground. Cole Hobson scored on two long touchdowns passes from Aaron Birnbaum. While Kenny Tilghman scored two touchdowns on the ground.. one on a sweep around the end and another on a 60 yard punt returned down the Titan sideline. And Zach Horvath scored a touchdown on a little Titan fun, a half back pass from Cole Hobson. The Titans now 4-0 will play on the road once again next week against Douglas Freeman.
Titans – tonight is the night you don’t want to miss. It will be a black night for the Skyhawks as the Varsity Titans battle them at home. We’re taking school spirit to a new level. Fill the stands. Yell your hearts out. Support our Varsity Titans. It’s serious business. Be there. Back in Black.

10.03 - Midlo Highlights
10.03 - Cosby 31, Midlothian 0
Second Blank of 2009
Let’s start the recap by making some corrections for what should have been on the RTD “Top Performers” report this morning …… Not blaming the RTD, as they report what is called in. The guys work hard, so when credit is due, it should be known. Jainard Crawley-Lambert ran for 100 yards with 1 rushing and 1 receiving touchdown each, not the 83 reported in the RTD recap. This should have been good enough to be on the Rushing list. Fuller Hoepner should have been near the top of the Passing list, having thrown 6-9 for 130 yards and 2 TD’s (and only played one half). Bryce Dillon should have made the Receiving list, with 3 receptions for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns. Any of these three athletes could have been on the All Purpose list. Anthony Delano should have made the Defense list with 9.5 tackles, 7 unassisted and 2 for a loss.
I wonder what percentage of High School teams elect to receive when they win the coin toss. The decision is probably based on the best tactical advantage it gives the coin toss winner. Good defensive teams may defer while good offensive teams may want to punch one in early.
The Trojans won the toss and elected to receive. Since teams with a good offense generally elect to receive, Midlo’s desire must have been to jump on Cosby early and put them in a hole. This was not the case, as the Trojans proceeded to go 3 and out. Jawuan Ferrell’s move to starting defensive line paid dividends on the first play when he combined with Patrick Callaway to make the first tackle of the game. Game stats for Jawuan (3.5 tackles, 2 unassisted, 1 sack) do not really show his full contribution on defense. There is no stat for scaring someone to run the other way or into another defender. On more than one occasion, he chased a Midlo ball carrier into the arms of another Cosby tackler. He also ran one in for a touchdown, but that score was called back due to a holding penalty.
After Cosby’s first possession stalled with a penalty, Anthony (Dell ahh no not Dell an oh) Delano (9.5 tackles, 7 unassisted 2 for a loss) made a nice open field tackle to end the Trojans next offensive series.
Cosby’s second possession was a short one. Fuller Hoepner (6-9, 130 yards through the air) connected with Bryce Dillon (3 receptions for 94 yards and 2 TD’s) for a short aerial pass, but a long run after the catch taking it all the way to the house. It would prove to be the only points Cosby would need, even though Cosby would score touchdowns on their next 3 possessions.
Midlothian tried to answer, engineering a nice drive of 50+ yards before stalling on a fumble. The Trojans were able to run the ball well most of the night gaining a total of 199 yards on the ground. Unfortunately for them, all their drives stalled due to miscues, either penalties or turnovers.
Cosby takes on Dominion District Rival LC Bird next Friday at home.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

09.25 - No. 7 Cosby 21, James River 14
Titans Tame Rapids
A battle of unbeaten Dominion District foes began with a nice rendition of the National Anthem by one of James River’s coeds. This beautiful voice set the tone for the first drive of the game by the home team Rapids. James River took the opening kick and drove 71 yards in 15 plays, chewing up 8:28 on the clock. They seemed to be able to run off tackle at will on a Cosby defense that has been stellar so far in this young season. There was no answer for Rapid’s Kevon White, who capped the James River drive with a one yard run for the first score of the game.
Cosby’s first possession was a quick three and out. It appeared that Cosby may be in for a long evening.
James River’s second possession saw their first down field pass, a throw that fell incomplete. This would be the last pass attempted downfield until the final seconds of the game. James River’s attack would remain on the ground for the rest of the half and most of the rest of the game.
James River’s second drive ended on a fumbled option pitch. The ball seemed to lay on the ground for what seemed like an eternity, but was actually only a few seconds. Cosby’s Jordan Egerton scooped the ball and returned it 18 yards to the Rapids 17. The Titan offense took it to the 1 as the 1st quarter ended. Fuller Hoepner punched it in for the score on the first play of the 2nd quarter.
The Titans were able to stop the Rapid’s next possession with a little help from a holding call that nullified a long gain. This forced James River to punt. Cosby got the ball and “Fuller Air” opened for business as Hoepner connected with Bryce Dillon for a 34 yard strike, which set the ball at the James River 4. Jainard Crawley-Lambert took it around the right end for the second Titan TD.
Cosby’s second TD did not deter James River. With the half closing, the Rapids marched the ball to the Cosby 1 yard line. Then punched it home with a little lob pass from James River’s Josh Wells to Connor Sweeney for 6.
The teams battled fairly evenly through the first 24 minutes of the game. The second half had a somewhat different complexion. Cosby made some adjustments at half time and stifled the James River running attack. The Titan defense held the Rapid offense to less plays from scrimmage than they had in the first quarter alone. Jawuan Ferrell played defensive line and provided just the right spark, penetrating “seeming” at will, disrupting the flow of the Rapid’s offense. From a scoreboard perspective, the 3rd quarter was a stalemate. The tide went Cosby’s way in the 4th. With the exception of a great field goal block by James River’s Jessee Wells and a few late passing yards against a prevent defense, the Titans commanded the 4th. “Fuller Air” found another on-time connection this time for Chris Lusk who took the ball deep into James River territory with time running down in the 4th. Andre Redd, Jawuan Ferrell, Jainard Crawly-Lambert and Fuller Hoepner all took turns driving it the remainder of the way with Hoepner taking it to the house with 32.5 seconds left to play sealing the Titan victory.

Titans Shoutout Cavlier's 17-0
Cosby’s defense was strong all night long. They smothered any attempt made by the Cavaliers to move the ball. Clover Hill was held to 150 yards of total offense with 75% of those yards coming in the first half. Clover Hill’s offense was led by three different players taking turns at quarterback. None were able to muster any scoring attempts. Defense in the first half was punctuated by a great hit put on Clover Hill’s Donte Strother by Alex Crawford. Strother was going over the middle for a pass. If it were completed, the Cavaliers would have had great field position. Instead, Crawford’s hit knocked the ball loose ending that drive.
Clover Hill’s defense was almost as good in the first half. They held the Cosby offense in check, allowing only a field goal. If you looked at the half time stats, you would have seen a pretty even game up and down the stat columns.
Penalties were costly to both teams early in the second half. The Cavalier’s had a nice kick return called back because of a block in the back. This coupled with Cosby’s warming defense shut down the Cavalier attack before it could start. Both teams battled fairly evenly through the 3rd quarter until the Titans, led by senior quarterback Fuller Hoepner (106 yards rushing, 144 yard through the air) threw an air strike to a wide open Jainard Crawley-Lambert who took it 67 yards to the house.
After another Clover Hill three-and-out, the Titans took possession of the ball with 8:59 left to play, up by 10. They proceeded to grind out a 5 minute 12 play drive, capping it off with Hoepner’s second aerial strike, this one to Chris Lusk for a touchdown. Cosby then preceded to shutdown and shutout the Cavalier offense to seal the victory.
The Cosby and Clover Hill communities took a few minutes at half time, setting aside the competition to pay tribute and honor Reverend Clay Thornton. You can see a transcript of the ceremony by clicking here.
