The bats were hot and the pitching was great. Danny Mooney hurled a complete game 4 hitter, allowing only 1 unearned run. The four Duke hits came as bookends, 2 in the first and 2 in the last with 5 hitless innings tossed in between. Mooney got plenty of run support as Cosby put runs on the board in 5 of their 6 at-bats, scoring 10 times on 17 hits. Two of those hits belonged to Mooney as he went 2-4 at the dish. 7 of the 9 batting slots had hits, six of the seven had multiple hits. We saw homeruns by Mitchell Shifflett and Kyle McKay. We saw doubles from Mitchell Shifflett, Tim Perry and Danny Mooney; RBI's McKay & Perry 3; Shifflett 2 and Luke Lowery 1.
Mitchell Shifflett had his 36th and 37th stolen bases of the season. He is now 37 of 38 for an SB percentage of .973.
Although the Titans had one error, the defense was solid, including some great leather flashing by Matt Daffron catching a low sinking line shot - taking a sure hit away from one of the Dukes.

06.05 - Titans are Central Region Champions
By Matt Murphy
For the second time this season, the Titans played two games in less than 24 hours. The first time they went 1-1 suffering a tough luck loss to Hanover after a great comeback try but bounced back the next afternoon beating Monacan to clinching second place in the district and a bye in the first round of the Dominion District tournament. There was a lot riding on the Monacan game and the Titans came through.
This time, the back to back games resulted in two Cosby wins. The first clinched a spot in the state playoff tournament when Cosby defeated Douglas Freeman 15-7 in Central Region semifinal action. Then about 15 hours later in the second game, they secured home field advantage for the state quarterfinal round by defeating Matoaca 8-7 in 8 innings.
Cosby will face the Eastern Region runner-up the Gloucester Dukes Tuesday, June 8th at 3:00 PM at Cosby in State Quarterfinal action.
The Freeman Game
After the second inning, the game’s outcome didn’t seem to be in question. The press reported that Cosby was the beneficiary of the Rebels running out of pitching. This is true. Freeman used 6 pitchers, with only one working multiple innings. Six pitchers combined for 172 pitches only 89 of those were strikes. But let’s not forget, the Titans put 13 hits on the board with each batting spot contributing hits. Mitchell Shifflett, Ben Sisk and Kyle McKay were all 2 for 3, Christian Beyer was 2 for 4. Hamlett, Lowery and Beyer all had doubles. There were at least 4 fly balls that were caught in the “spacious” Diamond that would have been home runs elsewhere. So with all factors considered, the Titans beat the Rebels.
Garrett Birnbaum pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing 2 runs only 1 earned while earning his 3rd victory of the season.
The Matoaca Game
This game pitted two coaches with very similar styles against one another. The game was being played at the Diamond, a professional park, which was a thrill for everyone involved. The game was being played in front of one of the largest crowds of the season. The game was being played in 90+ degree heat with little shade for not only the fans, but for the players.
The game had meaning, a Championship and home field advantage in the state quarterfinal round of the playoffs hung in the balance. Both teams were #2 seeds, but Matoaca had the advantage of being the home team this day and had slightly more rest that Cosby, who did not arrive back at the field house before 11 the night before at which time uniforms needed to be laundered. I don’t know about most people, but I find it difficult to sleep immediately after getting home.
Travis McQueen was given the nod and pitched very well for 6 innings, holding a quality Warrior lineup to 4 runs on 6 hits. Cosby’s offense had seemingly given McQueen enough for a win. Mitchell Shifflett (4 for 5), triple, 3 runs, 2 RBI’s, 3 SB, game winning RBI single; Christian Hamlett (3 for 4) Run, 2 RBI’s, triple, 2 SB; Will Vacca (4 for 4), triple, SB; Kyle McKay and Luke Lowery contributed extra base hit doubles, Matt Daffron giving himself up for the team with 2 sacrifices to move runners into scoring position. With all that offense, can any lead be safe? Especially against a quality opponent like Matoaca?
Cosby’s Danny Mooney would come in to pitch the 7th. He retired the first 2 batters and it appeared that Cosby would be Central Region champs any moment. But some Titan miscue’s allowed extra batters to come to the plate. The Warriors pushed 3 unearned runs across to tie the game in the 7th forcing extra innings. It looked like Mooney might get another tough luck loss like he did in Hanover.
The “never down” Titans opened the 8th with a double from Kyle McKay. He was sacrificed to 3rd by Matt Daffron, then driven in by a Mitchell Shifflett single for what would be the game winning run.
Bottom of the 8th, is a 1 run lead safe? Even with your ace on the mound? Well yes, Mooney got the first out batter to foul out to right field. Christian Hamlett making a great run and sliding catch a few inches off the ground. Second Warrior singles through the left side putting the tying run aboard. The third batter skied one to left that Christian Beyer camped under. Two down. We’ve been there before. Mooney struck out the last batter to seal the Championship for Cosby. It’s first Central Region title in baseball in the schools history.
06.05 - Cosby claims Central baseball title over Matoaca
Mitchell Shifflett went 4 for 5, scored three runs and had the winning RBI as Cosby defeated Matoaca 8-7 in 8 innings to claim the Central Region baseball championship at The Diamond.
Matoaca, Cosby to play for Central Region baseball supremacy
When three of Matoaca’s first four hitters doubled in the top of the first inning, the game had the makings of a blowout. Mills Godwin showed its mettle, though, and never let the Warriors run away with it. After suppressing a seventh-inning rally, Matoaca defeated Godwin 8-6 last night in the Central Region semifinals. Matoaca will play Cosby today at 1 p.m. at The Diamond for the championship. Both teams will advance to the state tournament, which begins next week
CENTRAL REGION BASEBALL: Cosby beats Freeman
Even though the game was held at The Diamond, you could easily forget you were watching a region semifinal. As it wore on, the matchup between Cosby and Douglas Freeman kept reminding you: It’s still high school.

06.02 - Cosby 4, Dinwiddie 1
Ben Sisk finished 2 for 4 with a double and two runs, and the Titans knocked off the Generals. Danny Mooney tossed a complete-game five-hitter, striking out four for Cosby, and Mitchell Shifflett went 2 for 4 with a run. Dinwiddie’s Chris King pitched a complete game and fanned nine batters, and Chip Baskerville went 2 for 2.

Cosby’s bats were “on” this afternoon. They executed when they needed to. They put numbers up in all but one inning. 1 hour 21 minutes, 10 runs, 12 hits and 6 innings later, the Titans would be moving on to face LC Bird in tomorrow night’s Dominion District Tournament Championship game.
Monacan fans may have been upset about the strike zone, but the umpire was calling the game the same for both teams - players need to adjust. The Monacan fans may have been upset about the sun on the outfielder’s faces. But the sun was the same for both teams. Titans managed to hit 3 triples, 3 doubles and 6 singles. One of those doubles by Luke Lowery (3-3, 2B, 3 RBI’s) was about 10 inches short of a 370’ home run, as his ball hit the wind flap hole at the top of the fence. Mitchell Shifflett (1-3, RBI, 2 Runs), Will Vacca (2-3, 2 3B, 2 runs) and Christian Hamlett(2-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s, 2B) were the other Titans that had extra base hits.
Danny Mooney threw another good game on the mound. He shut out the Chiefs allowing only 4 hits while striking out 3. All Dominion District 1st team first baseman Ben Sisk made three excellent plays on wide/high throws coming down with them – sweeping the tag on the runners. He also went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s including a close play at first. The rest of the Cosby defense was “on” as well, with some great infield plays by all the fielders.
LC Bird is next, tomorrow at 5pm
05.25 - Postponed
This afternoon's matchup between Cosby and Monacan has been postponed until tomorrow, 5.25 @ 4:30. The postponement is a result of the first game running long with extra innings. The start of the second game would be delayed to the point where daylight could become a factor and that is not something that should be a factor, it should be the two teams playing a full game. If you had tickets to the game, they will be honored tomorrow, be sure to have your stub with you.
05.21 - Skid stops, Cosby 7, Monacan 1
Today’s game can be summed up very easily - Mooney threw another gem and all runs coming as a result of the long ball. After taking a tough luck loss last night at Hanover in relief, Danny Mooney came back about 19 hours later and beat Monacan throwing a complete game 6 hitter, striking out 8 and walking only 1. The only dent in his armor was a home run to the opposite field by the Chiefs Cory Tuzzo in the 4th.
Although the Titans only managed 4 hits, Mooney had the support of 3 Titan home runs. Two in the first inning - a two run shot to right center by Christian Hamlett (1-2, 2 runs, 2 rbi’s, 2 SB) scoring Mitchell Shifflett (1-2, 2 runs, 4 SB) who walked ahead of him. Luke Lowery (1-3, run, rbi) teamed up for the second back-to-back of the season, team leading 5th “jack”, a solo shot to left. The rest of Cosby’s runs came in the 5th with two outs. Three consecutive walks before Ben Sisk (1-3, 1 run, 4 rbi’s) stepped in and took a 0-1 fastball downtown for a “granny”.
The victory seals Cosby’s hold on second place in the Dominion District, securing a BYE in the first round of the tournament scheduled next week. The Titans will face the winner of the (3 – 6) matchup pitting James River against Monacan on 5/24. The (4 – 5) matchup will have LB Bird hosting Clover Hill. The winner will play Manchester.
(Many times, the scorebook / box maintained by the two teams results in a different amount of hits or errors based on their opinions of how to score certian play. Seldom are there differences in "K's". I am not sure how there was a descrepancy in strikeouts as reported to the Times Dispatch... Danny Mooney fanned 8, perhaps because two were dropped third strikes - catcher to first putouts, but those should still go down as a strikeout for both the pitcher and batter. A putout is different. Ona normal strikeout the catcher is credited with a putout. on a dropped third strike putout, it is scored an assist with the putout credited to the firstbaseman. Strikeout is a batting and pitching stat, not the same as putouts)

05.20 - Hawks 13, Titans 12
Cosby dropped a non district contest last night to the Hanover Hawks 13-12. This puts the slide at 3, the longest of the season and the worst time of the year to skid. The Titan bats were alive last night but they did not play the leather very well. The Titans will have to be more heads-up in the field if they plan to go very far in the playoffs. “All you need is glove”.
The Titans owned the first three innings, the Hawks the second three. Cosby comes into the top of the 7th behind by 7. Would they have an “8” in them? Improbably? – maybe, but don’t bet against them. The Titans have come from behind enough this year, they do know the route well.
Cosby sent 10 men to the plate in the 7th, scoring 7 of them, punctuating the comeback drive with a 2 run blast deep into the night off the bat of Luke Lowery. Lowery’s shot was crushed to left field, well inside the foul pole, 30 feet or more above the height of the foul pole, still on an upward trajectory. If there were tape measures, this one probably would have needed one with a minimum of 450 feet. That ball sure did get out of there in a hurry. To use a cliché “Something that flies that high ought to have a stewardess on it”. And to quote ~ Babe Ruth ~ “I only have one superstition, I made sure to touch all the bases when I hit a homerun” .
The Hanover attack was led by junior centerfielder Bryan Johansen (2-3, run), sophomore right fielder Lew Johnson (2-4, 2 runs) and freshman Andrew Knizner (2-4, run, 4 rbi’s, 2B, HR, sac fly). The Cosby offense came from 8 of the 9 batting holes. Ben Sisk (3-3, 2 rbi’s, 3B), Christian Beyer (2-3, run, rbi), Travis McQueen (2-4, 2 runs, 2 rbi’s), Will Vacca and Christian Hamlett both contributed 1-3, run, rbi efforts, Kyle McKay (1-3, RBI, 2B) and the homerun by Luke Lowery (1-4, HR, run, 2 rbi’s).
The Titans face the Chiefs at Monacan this afternoon. The outcome will determine a first round bye in the Dominion District tournament. If Cosby wins, they secure sole possession of 2nd place. If they drop the game, then a coin flip with James River will determine the ownership of 2nd place.

05.18 - PHS team celebrates win over Cosby
Powhatan Today
Cosby, a Group AAA state semi-finalist a year ago, entered the game 12-4 and ... The Titans tied it in the fifth, 8-8, largely due to an error of omission. ...
05.15 - Titans Skid Hits 2
The Titans came up short against Manchester Thursday dropping the contest 3-1. They lost last night to Powhatan 12-8. What had been one of Cosby’s strengths - the late innings -many times coming from behind – having outscored opponents 17-2 in the 7th inning - turned into their Achilles heel these past two days. The Lancers pinned a deuce up on the board in the 7th Thursday and the Indians a 4 yesterday. The Titans did not answer in either case. The 2 game skid matches the Titans longest of the season.
If you saw Thursday’s contest, you witnessed a pitching duel between the Lancer’s VCU bound Ryan Morrison and Cosby’s Garrett Birnbaum. Birnbaum held the powerful Manchester offense in check for 6 1/3 innings. The only run Manchester scored in the first 6 innings was a result of a sky high pop dropping between the Cosby pitcher, catcher and third baseman. A steal, sacrifice and wild pitch gave the Lancers their first run. (A wild pitch, yes, this can cause some debate for those who saw or score a game. When a ball goes less than 58 feet in flight, I score it a wild pitch. If it is a pitch in the dirt, 58 feet or longer, I judge whether or not the catcher - a high school student and teen ager - should have been able to block the ball using reasonable effort). Birnbaum got tagged with two more runs in the 7th only 1 earned. The other would not have scored if Cosby executed a double play. Instead an errant throw allowed a second runner to score.
Cosby put their only run on the board in the 5th. Mitchell Shifflett singled, stole second then third and scored when Ben Sisk singled through the right side. Although this was thier only run, the Titans had their chances throughout the game but could not close the deal. They had runners in scoring position in 6 of the 7 innings, leaving 9 total in scoring position.
The Powhatan game was the opposite. It was a slugfest. Both teams pitching depth down as a result of other district games played earlier in the week and family commitments (this was a rain makeup date). The Cosby defense was less than stellar committing 3 errors in the 1st inning. Cosby recovered “somewhat” tying the game in the 5th. The Indians scored 4 more times in the 7th to seal it. A hit batter, walk, missed fielder’s choice unable to get the runner at the plate, another walk, a missed double play and 3 hits interspersed gave the Indians their runs.
The game saw 4 home runs. Powhatan’s Kurt Taylor - a solo shot leading off the 3rd, Christian Hamlett matched this – a solo shot of his own in the bottom half of the inning, Mitchell Shifflett hit a 2 un blast in the 4thand Tim Perry had a solo shot in the 5th.
Next up Monacan @ Monacan Tuesday, weather permitting. A win seals the Titans hold on second place in the district. A loss coupled with a James River win would lead to a tie for second place.

05.14 - Strategic walk backfires for Cosby; Manchester remains unbeaten in district
With the go-ahead run on second base and first base open in the top of the seventh inning of a 1-1 deadlock, Cosby baseball coach Tim Lowery wasn’t about to let Manchester’s Ryan Morrison swing the bat. The intentional walk of Morrison was no disrespect to Michael Pegram, the next batter due in the Manchester lineup. Lowery was simply playing the percentages and hoping Garrett Birnbaum could get Pegram to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

05.11 - Titans Stop Rapids 17-5
I sometimes think of headlines as the games progress. Unless the headline runs, I seldom share the ones that do not make the cut. Today's headline after 1 inning was going to read "River drowns Titans".
Being the visitor, Cosby had their first at bats, but were quickly three up and three down. James River's sophomore ace Nathan Kirby, set the top of the order down 1-2-3, all K's, two of them looking. His curveball looked like it would be unhittable. James River then proceeded to post a 3 in their half of the inning, sending 8 men to the plate. After Kirby set down the first Titan in the 2nd with another K, the wheels began to come off the wagon. Cosby's bats came alive. Two walks and four hits later the Titans were up 6-3. Although 6 was ultimately enough to win it, the Titans put 11 more on the board They would not look back. After a shaky first, Cosby's starter Ben Sisk rebounded and faced two batters over the minimum over the next three innings. After giving up a double in the 5th, Sisk gave way to Michael Carpenter who came in an closed it out for Cosby getting the remaining 9 outs punctuated with a striek'em out, throw'em out play - working with his battery mate Luke Lowery and Ben Sisk, (now the first baseman) Carpenter struck out the batter and Lowery threw to Sisk to catch the runner on first to far off the base - game over.
Lowery also contributed with monster blast in the 6th, a solo shot to right center - borrowing a phrase from a famous movie - anything that floes that high ought to have a stewardess on it.
Congratulations to Louis Diesel who is a pitcher, but was pressed into base running service and scored his first ever varsity run.
Next up, Manchester - weather permitting at Cosby on Thursday.
05.11 - From the Times Dispatch
Cosby vaults to No. 2
The Cosby Titans jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 in the T-D Top 10 this week after narrowly defeating Mills Godwin 6-4 and Matoaca 8-7 in eight innings. Luke Lowery hit a walk-off home run to beat Godwin and Tim Perry hit a walk-off single to top Matoaca.
Because both games were nondistrict contests, the three teams did not start their best pitchers. So while it might be hard to predict how the teams would stack up again in a region playoff, Cosby coach Tim Lowery likes the boost his teams received.
"Our kids got a little confidence," Tim Lowery said. "We feel like we can compete with any team. We were evenly matched. We just got fortunate." Because each of the conference's top teams has at least one pitcher with shut-down ability, several league coaches have said the Central Region title could come down to one hit, one defensive effort, or one strong bullpen stand.
"I think there's more parity this year," Tim Lowery said.
The importance of last week, however, is dwarfed by Cosby's next two games. The Titans take on James River (7-3 Dominion, 10-5) today and Manchester (8-0, 15-1) Thursday. With a 7-2 district record, if Cosby loses either of these games, it will be very difficult for the Titans to take the district crown. -- From Staff Reports

05.07 - #4 Cosby beats #2 Matoaca 8-7 in 8 Innings
For the second time in as many games, the Titans beat a highly ranked non-district opponent. Tonight, Matoaca fell to Cosby in 8 innings by the score of 8-7.
The games started as many others, with the Warriors jumping on top by 2 before Cosby had a chance to bat. Tonight, the Titans answered immediately, scoring 3 in their half of the first. The game see-sawed back and forth, with Matoaca tying it in the 5th with a bomb. The score would stay knotted until the 8th.
After last games walk-off homer by Luke Lowery in the bottom of the 7th against Mills Godwin, Cosby’s Christian Beyer tried to do the same thing, this time to right center but Warrior right fielder Zach Jordan caught the ball right in front of the 363 sign. The heroics would have to wait until the 8th. In the top of the 8th, Matoaca got a man on by virtue of a hit batter. But the inning ended on a disputed interference call on a double play. Onto the bottom of the 8th. Christian Hamlett (4-5) singled up the middle. He then stole second. This forced Matoaca to intentionally walk Luke Lowery (2-2). Ben Sisk (2-5) loaded the bases with a single through the right side. It could have been the game winner but Hamlett was held up and had to retreat to 3rd. Warrior right fielder Zach Jordan had already thrown out one Titan at the plate earlier in the game.
Tim Perry stepped into the box. 1 out, bases full of Titans – first pitch - foul-ball. Second pitch – strike. Perry hit the third pitch of JMU bound Michael Howerton hard to second base. The Warrior middle infield was not able to turn two, or even get one…… Hamlett scores on the play and the game is over.
Back to district play, when the Titans travel to James River on Tuesday.

05.05 - 3-run homer powers Cosby past Godwin
It took Cosby almost the whole game, but the Titans finally seized a scoring opportunity. Down one run with two outs in the seventh inning, sophomore catcher Luke Lowery hit a towering walk-off home run to give No. 4 Cosby a 6-4 win over No. 3 Mills Godwin. With a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Godwin’s Eagles brought in pitcher Erik Payne, who has committed to South Carolina. He allowed one-out singles to Will Vacca and speedster Mitchell Shifflett. With the winning run on base, Payne struck out Kyle McKay, putting Godwin (12-2) one out from the win.
05.05 - Lowery’s Walk-Off Jack Grounds the Eagles 6-4
The stage is set. There are two outs in the bottom of the 7th. There are two runners on base. Cosby is trailing 4-3. The count is 1-1. Cosby’s catcher Luke Lowery (1-3, HR, 3 RBI’s) stands in facing Godwin’s pitcher Erik Payne was throwing gas. Almost any kid who has ever picked up a bat, dreams of hitting a walk off homer. Dreams can come true. Pitch number 3 to Lowery – bat meets fast ball – ball flies high into the sky clearing the left centerfield fence with plenty of room to spare. Deflation in the Godwin stands – Game Over.
#4 Cosby faced off against #3 Mills Godwin today in a non district matchup. The Eagles lit it up in the top of the 1st sending 8 men to the plate, scoring 4. After one half inning of play, one had to wonder if this might end in 5 innings. The Titans have come from behind in late innings in 5 of their 11 wins this season, so all things were possible.
The comeback began in the bottom of the 1st, when Cosby scored one of their own when Mitchell Shifflett (3-3, 2 SB, HR) singled, stole two bases and scored on Christian Hamlett’s (2 RBI’s)team-at-bat dribbler to the pitcher. After the 1st inning, the Titan pitching staff and defense shut the Eagle offense down, allowing only 3 more hits, two of them infield hits. The defense, led by Luke Lowery picked off one runner at first, and caught another stealing at second.
Shifflett chipped another run off the lead in the 3rd, when he hit a solo homer to centerfield leading off that inning. Another run was chiseled off the lead in the 6th, when Lowery was hit by a pitch. His courtesy runner Evan Plumley moved to second when Ben Sisk (1-2) singled. Plumley moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Hamlett reached on a fielder’s choice. This all set the stage for the last inning heroics.

Titans 12, Indians 6
The Titans faced an undermanned Indians team this evening and came away with a 12-6 victory. Ben Sisk got his first decision of the season. He also got it done with the bat, going 2 for 3 and taking one to the chest (hit-by-pitch). Cosby’s bats were alive to back Sisk’s outing. Luke Lowery 3 for 4, 1 RBI and 3 runs scored; Christian Hamlett 3 for 4, 1 run and 1 RBI; Tim Perry 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s. Evan Plumley and Travis McQueen both had hits that drove in two runners each. Powhatan had its chances scoring 6 runs on 9 hits. If the Indians are back at full roster, the rain makeup game at Cosby week after next ought to be a good game to see.

04.23 - Back-to-Back Wins in the Dominion District
Cosby 3, Monacan 1
Great pitching performance this afternoon by Danny Mooney and some timely hitting earned the Titans a win over a tough Monacan Chiefs team. After a 24 pitch relief appearance last night that earned him his first save of the season, Danny Mooney took the mound this afternoon chasing his fourth win of the season. He scattered 6 hits over 7 innings, striking out 6 and allowing no earned runs in a complete game effort.
Three Titans had multi-hit games, Mitchell Shifflett (2-3, 1 RBI), Luke Lowery (2-3) and Ben Sisk (2-3, 1 run). In the 2nd, Ben Sisk singled through the right side. Christian Beyer grounded out to the pitcher, a SAC Bunt, advancing Sisk to second. Tim Perry walked. Michael Carpenter doubled down the right field line scoring Sisk for an RBI; Perry advanced to third. Matt Daffron hit a SAC Fly deep down the right field line scoring Perry, RBI. In the 4th, Tim Perry had an infield single and scored when Mitchell Shifflett single up the middle, RBI.
The Chiefs put their run up in the 5th on an error, a fielder’s choice, then a Brandon Granger double to the right field gap. Monacan tried to mount an threat on the 7th, but Cosby was able to turn-two to end the game with a 5-4-3 double play.
Next up, LC Bird on the 27th at home (weather permitting)
04.22 - Titans 13, Trojans 11 in a Slugfest
I’ve used this analogy before, but it is very appropriate for today’s action. It was like the old “Rock’em Sock’em” robots (a toy from yesteryear for you younger crowd). Midlothian and Cosby went toe to toe for 7 full innings, going right down to the last out before the outcome was known. Don’t be fooled by the Trojans record. Their remaining opponents should be prepared for a battle; this team will not just roll over.
With 1 on and two outs in the bottom of the 7th, down by 2 runs, Midlothian’s Nick Whiteside sent one high into the sky to the deepest part of the park – it had a real chance of tying the game, but Mitchell Shifflett was able to catch it high just before it would have hit the wall, to end the game.
The teams combined for 24 runs and 32 hits. With so much offense, there are many players who deserve a write up or a mention in the paper, but it would be hard to mention everyone.
8 Titans had 2 or more hits, with Christian Hamlett going yard twice, tying Kyle McKay for the team lead in home runs. Luke Lowery doubled twice to tie him for the team lead in doubles. He also drove in two runs giving him the team lead in that category. Mitchell Shifflett, Kyle McKay, Garrett Birnbaum Christian Hamlett and Tim Perry also had doubles. It was also the first game in memory, that there were no Titan K’s.
Next up, Monacan tomorrow afternoon at home.
04.21 - Atlee Spanks Cosby 7-0
There isn’t much to say from the Cosby standpoint about last night’s game. The Titans were able to muster only two hits, made three errors and gave Atlee extra outs. The Raiders took advantage of the extra opportunities. All 3 Raider runs in the first and their lone run in the 5th were a result of extra outs. Two of the three runs in the second came via free passes.
If the weather cooperates, next up will be Midlothian on Thursday and Monacan on Friday.

After a tough loss in the homer-dome yesterday, the Titans rebounded this afternoon defeating Midlothian 10-0 in 5 innings. Danny Mooney pitched a complete game 2 hitter, striking out 9, walking 1. He received plenty of offensive help. Cosby pounded out 12 hits including 2 triples (Luke Lowery and Mitchell Shifflett), scoring runs in each of their at-bats. The offensive attack was led by Christian Hamlett, 3 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored; Luke Lowery also 3 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and a triple; Evan Plumley 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s and Ben Sisk 2 for 3, 3 RBI’s and 1 run scored.
Next up, Atlee, next Tuesday.

04.01 - Titans Fall Heading into Spring Break
James River beat Cosby this afternoon 7-3. Each team had 10 hits, but the Rapids made the most of their hits and opportunities, plating 2 in the first inning, 4 in the third and a 1 in the seventh. The Titans were not able to muster much offense against James River starter Nathan Kirby. They scored 1 in the second, but that was it until the 6th, when the Titans threatened to come back, only to fall short. Will Vacca was 3 for 4 with one 1 scored and Christian Hamlett was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.
Next up for the Titans will the a trip to Manchester on the Tuesday after spring break.

03.26 - Cardiac Kids, Titans 6, Confederates 5
Ben Sisk got the nod yesterday going 4 innings, striking out 5 Confederates. He pitched pretty well but got dinged in the second when Lee Davis put up a 4 on the scoreboard, 3 of them coming off a base clearing 3 run homer by Cory Thacker. It looked like it might turn into a bad night for the Titans, as Lee Davis starter, Michael Kluver kept the Titans off the scoreboard for 3 innings. The 4th was his Achilles Heel. Ben Sisk and Christian Beyer began to chip away at the confederate lead. Sisk sent the first pitch of the fourth inning deep into the night in right center. Beyer followed that with a shot if his own in almost the same spot. I don’t recall if this is Cosby’s first back to back jacks. Kluver walked the next two and Evan Plumley loaded the bases when he reached on a fielder’s choice sac bunt that the pitcher throwing to 3rd base too late.
Lee Davis made a pitching change, bringing in fire-baller Jordan Boze, who proceeded to strike out the side. The game moved along with Cosby now pitching by team, they used 5 pitchers, 4 in the last 3 innings. The Confederates put what appeared to be the final nail in Cosby’s coffin when they scored another run in the bottom of the 6th. The top of the 7th began with a fly out, a walk and a line drive “bee-bee” to short. 2 outs, guy on first. The next two Titan’s reached on walks. 2 out bases jammed, down by 3, Luke Lowery stepped into the batter’s box. The Ebony Omaha not even broken in. Lowery worked the count to 2 and 2, then sent a shot deep to right center (all 4 homers in the game went to the same area) for a grand slam 6-5 Cosby lead.
Lee Davis threatened in the 7th, but the Titans held them scoreless for the come from behind win.

03.24 - Cosby wins the battle of the 7’s
by Matt Murphy
Cosby climbed to 3-0 on the season, 2-0 in the district beating their 360 rival Clover Hill 6-1. Davidson bound Danny Mooney had another fine pitching performance going the distance striking out 9 and walking 1. Mooney faced off against Clover Hill’s Nick Santalucia (both sport #7). Santalucia dominated early setting down the first 8 Cosby batters, 4 of them on strikes.
Mooney matched him pitch for pitch, with the exception of one that Josh Reavis put over the 343 sign in left center in the bottom of the first. That was the only threat Mooney allowed, scattering 5 other Cavalier hits over the remaining 6 innings.
Santalucia was not able to match Mooney the rest of the way. The first chink in his armor appeared in the 4th, when he walked the first of 6 batters in the game. Christian Hamlett was the recipient of the first one. Ben Sisk sacrificed Hamlett to second, reaching on an error. The bases were loaded when Christian Beyer walked. The Titans were only able to score one off a deep sac fly off the bat of Luke Lowery that scored Hamlett.
Cosby put two more on the board in the 5th. Mitchell Shifflett singled, went to second when Kyle McKay walked. Shifflett moved to third on a deep fly to right by Christian Hamlett. McKay stole second (it was contested, meaning the catcher threw down, but McKay beat the throw to second.) With two runners in scoring position, Ben Sisk ripped a bullet into the left center gap, scoring both Shifflett and McKay.
The rest of the scoring came in the top of the 7th. Matt Daffron (2 for 4) singled to lead off. Mitchell Shifflett walked after being down 0-2. Kyle McKay moved the runners over on a perfectly executed sac bunt. Clover Hill opted to intentionally walk Ben Sisk (who earlier ripped a gap shot for a double). This would come back to haunt the Cavalier’s as the next batter, Christian Beyer hit a gap shot double of his own, scoring all three base runners.

03.19 - Titans win in 8
The Titans beat the Warriors from Henrico this afternoon 6-5 in 8 innings. It was a see-saw battle until the end. Cosby drew first blood in the bottom of the first. Christian Hamlett took one off the melon, more accurately to the face. Bryan Carson pinch ran for Hamlett. He was moved to second on a single by Tim Perry and scored on a Ben Sisk base hit.
Henrico answered in the top of the 3rd with back to back doubles and some base stealing to go ahead 2-1. Cosby put 3 up in the bottom half of the 3rd to go back ahead 4-2. Will Vacca singled, went to second on Luke Lowery’s single. Christian Beyer singled, scoring Vacca and sending Evan Plumley (Lowery’s pinch runner) to third. Matt Daffron then doubled scoring both Plumley and Beyer.
The Warriors answered right back in the top of the 4th, scoring 2, tying it, where it would remain until the 8th. Henrico scored one in the top of the 8th to take a 5-4 lead, but that lead would only last a few minutes. In the bottom of the 8th, Luke Lowery led off with a double. Adam Meeker would run for the catcher Lowery. Christian Beyer hit his third single of the night moving Meeker to 3rd. Beyer stole second. Henrico elected to intentionally walk Mitchell Shifflett. With the bases loaded, Kyle McKay singled scoring Meeker with the tying run, and Beyer with the winning run. Louis Diesel got the win in relief of Garrett Birnbaum.
There was not one star, or one performance that stood out above another, making it a nice team win. Christian Beyer went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Luke Lowery went 2 for 4 with a double. Matt Daffron went 1 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI’s and Kyle McKay went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s.
Next up for the Titans, Clover Hill away on Tuesday.
03.19 - The Karaoke Kid Hurls a Gem
Danny Mooney was solid tonight in Cosby’s season opener against LC Bird, blanking the Skyhawk’s while going the distance. He stuck out 9, walked 2 and gave up 3 hits. The Titans were not able to muster a lot of offense against Bird pitcher Connor Kaufman, but got a couple of key hits at the right time. Will Vacca singled in the 6th, Kyle McKay walked then Christian Hamlett drove Vacca home on a single to center.
The game began when the first batter Mitchell Shifflett singled to right. At that moment, it looked as though the baseball God’s might be smiling on Cosby's season. Shifflett proceeded to steal second, then third, but was stranded there. The tempo of the game was fast, with both teams getting base runners, but both pitchers worked well and snuffed out any scoring chances except the one mentioned above. The Skyhawks only threat came in the second when they got a base runner to third, but Mooney was able to get the last batter to fly out to center.

03.07 - Hamlett Owns RF&P
The Titans looked good in their preseason opener beating the Hermitage Panthers 8-1. The offense was powered by Christian Hamlett with two home runs. James Sink and Evan Plumley added deep shot gap doubles. The defense was solid with good plays coming from Kyle McKay, Matt Daffron and Will Vacca. Pitching was solid led by Danny Mooney fanning 6 in two innings of work. Ben Sisk, Louis Diesel, Ty Holt and Garrett Birnbaum all looked good. Cosby had two multi-run innings. If they are able to sustain this level of play, they will vie for the dominion District title.
