02.24 - Boy's Drive to States Ends

The Titans run at the State tournament ended last night at the hands of Thomas Dale.  The Knights defeated Cosby 69 – 57 in the Central Region Quarterfinals.  Longwood University bound David Robinson scored 22, freshman Nick Coppola had 17 and Matt Gorski had 12.
Thinking positive, it’s tough after a season ending loss and the end of team-leader David Robinson’s high school career, but the Boy’s had a very good season.  They entered the season unranked in the Times-Dispatch top 10 and ended the season on that list.  The boy’s were 14-3 in district play (including tournament wins).  Although he got in foul trouble last night, Matt Gorski has matured into a dominant force in the pivot.  He has learned to stay away from the “cheap fouls”.  No one in the district was able to handle him.  Matt Gorski and the emergence of freshmen Nick Coppola, Nick Gorski and the return of a healthy sophomore Jaylen Hinton provide for a solid foundation to take a run at the title next year.
Congratulations on a very good season.

The second weather related layoff of the season did not seem to cool the red-hot Titans.  They came out shooting with deadly accuracy. The Falcons came out uncharacteristic turning the ball over. The result was a quick double digit lead for Cosby. There would be no need for Cosby to look over their shoulder.  Next up, weather permitting - Manchester tomorrow night at home.

Cosby pulled away early and never looked back.  Although the final score doesn't really look like one, this game was a run away.  To steal a line from Del Shannon - a "run run run run runaway".  Throughout most of the game, the lead hung around 20 points.  Wythe's offense in the first half consisted of shots mostly from beyond the arc.  Their adjustments and taking it into the lane and to the hoop helped close the point gap.  David Robinson (19 points), Matt Gorski (15 points), Nick Coppola and Daniel Virak led Cosby.

Not a FoulThe atmosphere in the gym tonight was electric.  The fans were treated to a great game.  Cosby put up 10 point leads twice in the contest, only to see Monacan chip away pulling to as close as a point away.  Matt Gorski was dominate on the boards at both ends and connected with most of his shots.  Robinson was his usual self, hitting key shots, some from behind the 3 point arc.  Nick Coppola picked up some key points driving the lane well.   With the clock winding down, the Chiefs pulled to within 1, at 59-58.  The next four points were scored from the free throw line, Robinson on both ends of a 1 and 1 and with the game still in question, Nick Coppola sealed the game with two of his own from the line.

Titans Dominate Rapids
Robinson, Virak and Gorski – no it is not a law firm.  It was the triumvirate that led the Titans to victory tonight.  Cosby opened up at 15-2 lead beginning the game.  James River chipped away but never came closer than 7.  The Titans dominated the second half with great all around performances by Daniel Virak (12 points) who grabbed several strategic offensive rebounds and going right back up for the bucket.  He also had two (one in each half) demonstrative dunks, putting exclamation points on Cosby’s charge to the basket.  Matt Gorski contributed 13 points most of which were score with Rapids hanging off his arms.  He also had several boards and blocks.  David Robinson (22 points) was his usual self, deadly on most shots put up.

Clover Hill Drops Cosby

A Robinson-less Cosby team took on Clover Hill this evening in a dominion district match up.  The Titans went down early and were never able to recover.  Once Clover Hill put up a double digit lead, the closest the Titans would come to getting back in it was 10 points.  David Robinson usually contributes 20+ points, which may have turned this one around.  Hopefully he will be off the IR for the next game.  The last time the Titans played sans (def: 1. without) Robinson was last year against Huguenot, where the boys turned in quite a performance, but falling short.  From a shooting percentage perspective, this was the antithesis (def: 1.Direct contrast; opposition) of the girls game last night.  Everything the Cavaliers threw up seemed to go in, even low percentage shots.  On the other hand, Cosby's shooting percentage was low, even on high percentage shots.  Other aspects of the game, including rebounding, were fairly even.  Next up, Midlothian on 12/18.

12.03 - Titans Win Opener
By Matt Murphy
Matt GorskiPlaying in the Douglas Freeman basketball tournament, Cosby came out in new white uniforms and handily defeated a small quick Varina team.   Although the final score indicates a resounding win, it was not until late in the second quarter that the Titans began to pull away.  The Bluedevils were playing a trap and press defense and using their speed to charge the lane on offense.  Cosby was trying to use their size to go low on offense while playing a zone defense.  The early edge went to the Bluedevils.  The Titans began to piece together the Varina puzzle late in the second quarter after Matt Gorski picked up a second foul.  In defense of Gorski, the second call was one of angles.  From where I sat, it appeared Matt was bringing his arms down after making a rebound when a Varina player ran underneath him and caused contact, but from the officials angle, they must have thought Gorski caused the contact.  In any event, when Gorski sat, Cosby’s offense had to adapt to not having the big man in the low post.  In making adjustments, the Titans went to a more traditional running-passing offense forcing the Varina defense to cover all players and not key on the low post.  On defense, the Titans began to trap as well, which knocked Varina out of its rhythm.  The combination allowed Cosby to pull ahead.  The second half would show they would not be looking back.

The second half started with Cosby, or should I say Matt Gorski outscoring the Bluedevils 14-4.  Gorski put the first 14 Titans points on the board growing Cosby’s lead to over 20.  Cosby was able to cruise most of the rest of the way and rest some starters.  Rest for the starters may be important with two more tournament games scheduled this week.

A couple of new faces made great
contributions, NickNick Coppola Coppola, freshman point guard, and Evan Bates, senior transfer from Clover Hill both looked good on the floor.  Coppola will be turning heads around the central region if he continues to run the floor like a veteran.

11.28 - Cave Spring Knights & Henrico Warriors join Titans in a Scrimmage / Jamboree
The first action of the day pitted defending AA state champs from Cave Spring against the Titans.  It was to be a battle of 7 footers, with Matt Gorski taking on Vanderbilt-bound Josh Henderson.  Gorski got the best of this match-up.  This combined with lights-out shooting by Cosby led by senior, Longwood-bound David Robinson was enough to subdue the Knights, beating them handily in each of their 3 quarters of play.

Cosby took on the Warriors from Henrico in their second action.  The Titans came out flat in the first quarter allowing the Warriors to take it easily.  Cosby's shooting eye returned in the second quater and they beat Henrico.

Early thoughts: With Jalen Hinton on the IR, it is good to see Freshman Nick Coppola able to step in and look like a veteran at point guard. The addition of Nick Gorski (freshman brother of Jr center Matt Gorski) the Titans now have three big men able to dunk, including Daniel Virak and  both Gorski's.  (This isn't taking anything away from any other player, this was just what was displayed in todays action.)  Cosby is also blessed with height, they seem to be the "biggest" I recall, with 7 players 6' 4" or taller.  If they can shoot for the percentages displayed today, this should end up being a great season.
